Castlevania: Belmont's Curse Black Screen & Controller Fix (PC)

Black Screen & Controller Fix (PC)
Quick answer: the black screen is officially addressed in two layers — Ver. 1.1.3 (October 16, 2026) targets the high-refresh-rate launch failure, and Konami's own workaround (set your monitor below 60 Hz, enable V-Sync, restore) still stands. But 1.1.3 is a narrow patch: it does not fix controller ghost input, and Konami says the black screen "may still occur in certain environments."
This page separates what Konami fixed from what it didn't, so you know which fix to try first.
Black screen — the official fix (Ver. 1.1.3)
Konami released Ver. 1.1.3 on October 16, 2026 (Steam announcement) specifically to address the launch black screen on high-refresh-rate monitors. The official wording:
"We have released an update to address an issue where the game may fail to launch and a black screen shows"
Two things to know, straight from Konami:
- It's not a guaranteed fix. Konami adds the caveat: "While we expect this update to improve the issue, it may still occur in certain environments." No full-fix date has been given; the studio says it is "continuing to work towards a full resolution."
- It's the only thing 1.1.3 changes. The notice lists no other fixes — no controller changes, no general stability list.
If you still get a black screen after 1.1.3, use the official workaround below — it predates the patch and remains the only first-party guidance besides contacting support.
Black screen — the official workaround (sub-60 Hz + V-Sync)
Konami's Known Issues Notice (October 14, 2026, for Steam / Xbox on PC) documents the launch failure trigger and the manual fix:
Trigger (official): the game "may fail to launch when V-Sync is turned OFF and FPS is set to Unlimited."
The five steps (official, verbatim):
- Change your monitor refresh rate in Windows to below 60 Hz.
- Launch the game and select Settings from the title screen.
- Under Video Settings, turn V-Sync ON, then close the game.
- Restore your monitor's refresh rate to its original setting.
- The game should now launch and play normally.
Konami stresses below 60 Hz, not exactly 60 Hz (confirmed by Space4Games).
Why it works: the failure is tied to running the game with V-Sync off and an uncapped frame rate on a high-refresh panel. Forcing V-Sync on once, at a low refresh rate, writes a safe setting that survives returning to your normal refresh rate.
If your monitor has no sub-60 Hz mode
This is a community workaround, not Konami-endorsed (source level D): cap the frame rate in your GPU driver and enable in-game V-Sync.
- NVIDIA — NVIDIA Control Panel → Manage 3D Settings → Program Settings → add the game → set Max Frame Rate to ~60.
- Then enable V-Sync in the game's Video Settings.
This approximates the official fix when your monitor can't drop below 60 Hz. Treat it as a fallback, not a guaranteed fix.
Controller "ghost input" — NOT fixed by any patch
A separate PC-launch problem: the game registering phantom button presses — menus and maps scrolling as if a direction is held, or involuntary inputs. This was widely reported at launch (GameWatcher, OpenCritic).
The honest state:
- Ver. 1.1.3 does not mention it. Konami's notice makes no reference to controller input, HID devices, or ghost input.
- No patch fixes it as of October 17, 2026. There is no 1.1.4, and no Konami acknowledgment of the ghost-input problem specifically.
Community mitigation (unofficial, source level D, single source):
- In Steam, set the game's controller handling from "Xbox Controller" to "Force Off", or
- Enable Steam Input for the game.
Neither is Konami-endorsed; both are user-reported workarounds.
Note: a day-one Switch patch fixed input lag, loading and resolution on Switch — that is a different platform and does not affect PC ghost input.
Which fix to try first
| Problem | Try this | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Black screen at launch (high refresh) | Install Ver. 1.1.3 | OFFICIAL fix, partial — may still occur |
| Still black screen after 1.1.3 | Sub-60 Hz → enable V-Sync → restore | OFFICIAL workaround |
| No sub-60 Hz monitor mode | GPU driver FPS cap ~60 + V-Sync | Community, unofficial |
| Controller phantom presses | Steam Input "Force Off" / enable Steam Input | Community, no official fix yet |
Sources & verification
- Ver. 1.1.3 — Steam announcement (OFFICIAL, level B). Caveat "may still occur in certain environments" quoted identically by multiple outlets.
- Official workaround — Konami Known Issues Notice (OFFICIAL, level B), reproduced by Space4Games.
- "Above 120 Hz" trigger — PC Gamer reporting (SINGLE-SOURCE, level D); Konami's own notice states no Hz number.
- Controller ghost input — problem is MULTI-SOURCE (launch coverage); the fix status (no patch) is OFFICIAL by absence in the 1.1.3 notice. The Steam Input / Force Off mitigations are SINGLE-SOURCE community (level D).
